KYP and the One Laptop Per Child "XO" Laptop Program
The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program continues to be an extraordinary success at KYP, and today there are currently almost 300 XO laptops at KYP. With their XO laptops, KYP members are becoming more effective learners at school, experts in the computing environment, and closely connected to the world beyond Kliptown and South Africa. The XO computers are also a useful tool for many of the older students in preparing homework assignments. Several of the KYP staff members have assisted with OLPC implementation at other locations in South Africa, such as the Lilydale Primary School, which many KYP members attend. In addition, committee members have received training at OLPC's Cambridge offices in the US, and have attended conferences in other parts of the world. KYP was very lucky to be the first organization in South Africa to receive 100 XO laptops from One Laptop Per Child. High-school students Hannah and Julia Weber had the inspiration to bring the laptops to help KYP members after they visited Kliptown on a Nobles South Africa Exchange.
